The Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ enables you to connect M.2 peripherals such as NVMe drives and AI accelerators to the Raspberry Pi 5 PCIe 2.0 interface, supporting fast (up to 500 MB/s) data transfer to and from NVMe drives and other PCIe accessories.

Raspberry Pi 5’s single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface is exposed on a 16-pin, 0.5mm-pitch FPC connector; the M.2 HAT+ M Key is a mechanical adapter board that converts between this connector and a subset of the M.2 standard.

It supports devices that have the M.2 M key edge connector, in the 2230 and 2242 form factors. It is capable of supplying up to 3A to connected M.2 devices.

The Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ conforms to the Raspberry Pi HAT+ specification and is autodetected by the latest Raspberry Pi software/firmware (please ensure you update Raspberry Pi OS before using). It is supplied with a 16mm stacking header and threaded spacers, so it can be fitted to a Raspberry Pi 5 with the Raspberry Pi Active Cooler in place.

We also offer the Raspberry Pi SSD Kit bundling this HAT with an official Raspberry Pi SSD, and the Raspberry Pi AI kit, which is a bundle of this HAT and a Hailo AI accelerator module, and a minimalist layer case for the Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+!

Want to stack a HAT on top of this one? You'll need one of these tall push-fit stacking headers.

Raspberry Pi and NVMe devices not included.

FAQ

  • Can I fit the M.2 HAT+ inside the official Raspberry Pi 5 case with the Active Cooler? Yes...kind of! If you pop the lid off the case, remove the central clear fan insert and don't use the bottom screws to secure the HAT to the Pi, it fits. The header supplied with the HAT keeps things secure enough. You can't fit the top lid section back on though. Like this:

Failed to operate. I first intended to use the M2 top hat which failed to operate at all - no power led on & seemingly dead on arrival. But with the bottom hat, using the same connecting cable, with the same nvme ssd drive, it fired up immediately and booted into ubuntu. This was disappointing to say the least. Is it possible to have a replacement M2 top hat mailed to me ? thank you. James Smith axiomdog@gmail.com

Easy to attach and worked out-of-the-box with a newly-bought Pi 5. I combined this with an NVMe SSD drive and was able to boot the Pi from it directly (after burning raspbian to the drive) without needing to make any firmware changes. Note that using the included 18mm GPIO stacking header and 14mm spacers (which make it fit nicely above the active cooler's fan with a gap for air) ends up with the pins flush with the top of the pass-through connectors on the board — you can see this in the photo of it assembled in the case. This is fine (tidy, even) if you just want a Pi with an M.2 connector, but means the pins are no-longer accessible, so buy a longer GPIO stacking header if you want to use this and also connect components.

I have looked around for alternative versions and concluded that this one, with the screen/camera cut out works the best. It also has a sufficient air gap if you have used the official Raspberry Pi Active cooler to ensure air flow around the Pi5. Works well.
