This is a Mini Real-Time Clock module designed for the Raspberry Pi. It can also be with an Arduino board too!
This accessory plugs on top of your Pi's GPIO pins and contains a clock chip and a tiny CR927 lithium battery that allows your Raspberry Pi to remember the time.
The module uses a DS3231 chip which can be coded to have an alarm function (you can see some discussions on this here and here, and there are plenty more on the internet too).
The battery doesn't recharge, but you should get 2-4 years out of one of these (very much depending on usage (how long the Pi is turned off) and local conditions).
