Pineboards AI Bundle (Hailo 8L) Documentation

This blog post is a backup from the now-unavailable Pineboards AI Bundle (Hailo 8L) documentation page. We have created this post to ensure this information remains available for our customers following the unfortunate closure of Pineboards.

The Pineboards AI Bundle (Hailo 8L) is an M.2 M-Key PCIe x1 NVMe board with support for 2230, 2242 and 2280 drives, with an included Hailo 8L AI accelerator.

Compatible with Raspberry Pi 5.

Packaging contents

  • Ai Bundle board with a pre-installed Hailo 8L (2230, A+E Key)
  • 40mm PCIe FPC cable with controlled impedance
  • 4 standoffs
  • M.2 drive standoff
  • 9 M2.5 screws

Assembly instructions

  1. Begin with inserting the FPC ribbon cable into your board. Use the alignment triangle to determine the proper direction, check the picture above for reference.
  2. Insert the NVMe drive using the provided standoff.
  3. Attach 4 metal standoffs to the board using M2.5 screws.
  4. Insert the PCIe cable into your Pi 5.
  5. Install the board on the bottom of your Pi 5. Please note that the side with the drive should not be facing the Pi. If you attach the board incorrectly, it will not function at all
  6. Power on the board, the PWR LED should be now on. If this is not the case please update the firmware on your Pi 5 or enable PCIe (check tutorials below).

Drivers

No drives are required for NVMe SSDs on the Raspberry Pi 5. We recommend regularly updating the firmware to benefit from constantly improving drive compatibility.

Hailo 8L needs the hailo-all package installed. (sudo apt install hailo-all)

Compatibility

The board is compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5.

Compatibility with Radxa boards featuring the 16-pin FPC connector is unknown since the Hailo software stack is not available for their operating systems.
