The SupTronics X1004 Dual NVMe SSD Add-on for Raspberry Pi 5 supports two full-size 2280 SSDs over PCIe 2.0 with 5Gbps speeds. Mounts like a HAT with GPIO passthrough, works with the official Active Cooler, and includes an activity LED.


Introducing the SupTronics X1004 Dual NVMe SSD Add-on, a high-speed storage solution for your Raspberry Pi 5. Its compact design enables easy attachment of two full-size M.2 2280 SSDs to your Raspberry Pi 5. With its PCIe 2.0 interface, you can experience data transfer rates of up to 5Gbps, allowing you to effortlessly transfer large amounts of data within seconds.

The X1004 is specifically designed to be placed on top of the Raspberry Pi 5, similar to a traditional HAT, and it provides a 40-pin header for easy access to the GPIO. With this NVMe add-on, you can still use your favourite HATs alongside it, and it is fully compatible with the Raspberry Pi Active Cooler. The inclusion of mounting holes and standoffs not only protects the drives but also effectively dissipates heat for reliable performance. The built-in LED light indicates the status of reading or writing.

NVMe SSD Incompatibility List

We recommend refraining from using the following NVMe SSD drives, which are equipped with a Phison controller due to their proven incompatibility:

  • WD Blue SN550/SN580 series
  • WD Green SN350 series
  • WD Black SN850 series
  • Other NVMe SSD drivers equipped with the same Phison controller

These specific models have demonstrated compatibility issues, and it is advisable to avoid them when considering NVMe SSD options for X10xx series NVMe add-ons. By steering clear of these drives, users can ensure a smoother and more reliable experience with their storage solutions.

A few other notes re SSD compatibility:

  • Compatible with M.2 NVMe SSDs
  • Not compatible with M.2 SATA SSDs, M.2 PCIe AHCI SSDs, or other M.2 non-NVMe devices
  • Older NVMe drives with less efficient flash media may not perform as well as newer drives
  • New NVMe SSDs are not partitioned and will need to be both partitioned and formatted when first connected to the Raspberry Pi before they can be accessed in the Explorer
