The Raspberry Pi TV HAT is a DVB-T2 Digital TV receiver add-on for the Raspberry Pi, compatible with all 40-pin Raspberry Pi boards (with headers soldered).

The Raspberry Pi TV HAT allows you to receive digital terrestrial TV broadcast systems, which include DVB-T and DVB-T2 on a Raspberry Pi. This means that you can receive and view TV on a Raspberry Pi or create a TV server that allows you to stream received TV over a network to other devices (including PCs, tablets, smartphones (via apps), media centres and more)

The TV HAT can be used on all Raspberry Pi boards when running as a backend (server for other devices on the network). The TV HAT features a Sony CXD2880 TV tuner supporting DVB-T and the second-generation DVB-T2 TV standards.

Performance when receiving and viewing TV on the Pi itself can vary, and we recommend using a Raspberry Pi 2 or later for this purpose.

The TV HAT does not support ATSC, the digital TV standard used in North America.

About DVB-T

Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) is the DVB European-based consortium standard for the broadcast transmission of digital terrestrial television. There are other digital TV standards used elsewhere in the world, e.g. ATSC which is used in North America. However, the TV HAT only supports the DVB-T and DVB-T2 standards.

Please note: it is the responsibility of the end user to ensure that they have the necessary permissions / license to receive broadcast television in their country

Raspberry Pi TV HAT
I thought this would be a good idea to get, not been able to get working properly yet, disappointed with the complexity of the software setup that only a programmer would love. I have set this aside for now, will have another go at it at some future date.

The HAT works fine, and the software to use it as a remote TV server works fine. However, if you're getting this to integrate into plex, don't bother. Plex has depreciated the feature needed to integrate the Pi TV so it is no longer possible to do so. This isn't a knock on the hardware, nor the fault of the hardware developers. So just keep in mind, the plex integration instructions on the page no longer work, sadly.

Bought to replace an old USB DVB-T, not only cheaper, but also got a USB socket back now! Straight forward to install (following the PiHut online instructions), working well with Tvheadend. Based on experience I would recommend this. [Note, if you use other pins of the GPIO there are no exposed pins after using the provided riser header.]

I bought this to replace a USB DVB-T2 tuner stick which was having problems (Pi couldn't power it sufficiently in addition to 3 other USB devices I had connected). It works well with TVHeadend and It even seems to tune to channels a bit faster than the USB tuner. The only downside I see is that it uses only the SPI interface, power and ground pins, but it occupies all 40 pins on the GPIO connector and has no way to easily use, for example, the UART pins while the HAT is plugged in. I am going to try wiring the individual SPI, power and ground pins to the HAT with jumper wires instead of plugging in the HAT directly, which I hope will let me continue using the UART as well as this HAT.

Brill product, use it to stream across to TVs connected to my Jellyfin server in the house so we don't need tohave an aerial cable in every place so saves me a lot of cabling! Very easy to setup, takes probably 10 minutes in all.

Easy to install the hardens hardware. Software was a pain to get going. It’s written in a way that assumes you know all the weird terminology for areal broadcast standards. Once it got going it seems to be nearly bulletproof and has been serving to my Apple TV well.
