This is a cost-effective SAW-based filtered pre-amplifier which gives excellent performance gains and improved reception on 161MHz/AIS frequencies.

This is a cost-effective SAW-based unit which gives excellent performance gains.

All Uputronics preamps are compatible with most USB SDR Dongles such as the RTL USB, Airspy, Fun Cube. You can power them from either bias tee (this item is 100% compatible with the Airspy bias-tee) or a USB-C cable.

Bias-tee voltage input is 5V.

Note: Unlike previous models, component supply issues mean bias-tee input voltage is 5V max.

This unit is a small filter and preamp designed to go between a software-defined radio receiver and an antenna. Using a SAW bandpass filter and a low noise amplifier (LNA), it stops out-of-band intermodulation while providing additional gain for increased sensitivity. The LNA is before the SAW filter. This particular model is tuned for use with 159-163MHz. To block strong commercial FM signals a high pass filter is installed before the LNA.

The LNA used is a MiniCircuits PSA4-5043+ which provides at least 20dB of gain @ 161MHz. To stop out of band intermodulation a 161MHz SAW bandpass filter, which has a 7.6MHz bandwidth, is also present. The insertion loss of this filter is approximately 1.4dB.

High-quality SMA female connectors are fitted for antenna input and radio output, a RED power indicator is provided.

162MHz AIS Filtered Preamplifier
I bought this from uptronics whilst it was out of stock here, as I bought everything else for my stations from here I thought it would be fair to write a review on pihut since no one else has. I have two AIS stations here in Greenock, Scotland UK. On a good day I receive anywhere between 70-80 ships with an average coverage of 70km (nautical miles). I am currently 112m above sea level with full view of the river. I have my antenna (AIS 162mhz Resonant) mounted 15m above the ground. There is a BT mast at Loch Fyne hosting an AIS Station which dwarfs both my stations together. So after some tinkering around and fitting low loss Messi and paoloni coax I decided I would but this preamp to maybe improve coverage. I have bought the 1090mhz version for ADS-B tracking and it worked well. So the AIS preamp arrived today from uptronics and I fitted it inline with my antenna and ctrx receiver. What a difference! I am now receiving in excess of 110 vessels and my range has shot up to 115km which is a big difference. Now I just need another one for my remote station. All in all, well worth the money and I highly recommend to any enthusiast tracking. MM7BVP
