To help mitigate the impacts of climate change, Raspberry Pi is offering Raspberry Pi Carbon Removal Credit to support the work of UNDO, an organisation whose mission is to permanently remove a billion tonnes of CO₂ from the Earth's atmosphere.
A Raspberry Pi Carbon Removal Credit takes the form of a credit-card-sized piece of card, bearing a unique verifiable serial number. The card represents an offset of the carbon footprint of manufacturing, shipping, and disposing of a Raspberry Pi board.
For each card produced, Raspberry Pi purchases 6kg of high-quality enhanced rock weathering carbon offsets from UNDO. These offsets are generated by spreading crushed basalt on farmland, absorbing the rated quantity of carbon from the atmosphere over a period of, at most, twenty years.
We do not recommend buying this product on its own. It is intended to be purchased alongside a Raspberry Pi board, kit, or other physical products which are already being shipped to you.
In natural rock weathering, as rain falls through the atmosphere, it combines with CO2 to form carbonic acid.
When this dilute acid falls on mountains, forests and grassland, the CO2 interacts with rocks and soil, mineralises and is safely stored in solid carbonate form. The natural process of weathering already accounts for the removal of 1 billion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere every year.
UNDO accelerate this natural process by spreading crushed silicate rock on agricultural land, increasing the surface area of the rock and therefore increasing its contact with CO2. Overall, they reduce the timescale from millions of years to mere decades. Once the reaction takes place, the CO2 is permanently locked away for 100,000+ years.
Here's an excellent video from UNDO explaining what Enhanced Rock Weathering is, and how it works:
