The Raspberry Pi Camera Module v2 is the second official camera board released by Raspberry Pi.

The Raspberry Pi Camera Module v2 is a high-quality 8-megapixel Sony IMX219 image sensor custom-designed add-on board for the Raspberry Pi, featuring a fixed focus lens.

The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 comes complete with a camera port! Using the new Raspberry Pi Zero Camera Adapter, you can now use a Raspberry Pi camera with your Zero. Similarly, Raspberry Pi 5 requires a special adapter cable to use this camera - available here.

It's capable of 3280 x 2464 pixel static images and also supports 1080p30, 720p60 and 640x480p90 video. The focal length of the Raspberry Pi Camera (the distance from the front of the lens to the closest object which is in focus) is around 50cm (according to this Raspberry Pi project page).

It attaches to the Raspberry Pi via one of the small sockets on the board's upper surface and uses the dedicated CSi interface, designed especially for cameras interfacing.

Please note the board PCB will state either V2 or V2.1, but the module is exactly the same specification (as different licensed manufacturers use different print on the board).

Features

  • Fixed focus lens on-board
  • 8-megapixel native resolution sensor capable of 3280 x 2464 pixel static images
  • Supports 1080p30, 720p60 and 640x480p90 video
  • Size 25mm x 23mm x 9mm
  • Weight just over 3g
  • Connects to the Raspberry Pi board via a short ribbon cable (supplied)
  • Camera v2 is supported in the latest version of Raspbian, Raspberry Pi's preferred operating system

Raspberry Pi Camera Module 2
The Raspberry Pi Camera Module V2.1 has been a great choice for my indoor security camera setup. The compact design made it easy to position discreetly, and it delivers clear video, ensuring I can monitor my space. Setting it up with the Raspberry Pi was straightforward, and I like the flexibility it offers for customization. It performs well in different lighting conditions, and I like that I can process footage locally without relying on cloud services. Overall, it’s a reliable, affordable, and efficient solution for indoor surveillance.

Raspberry Pi Camera Module 2
For the money, it's brilliant. Very easy to use if you're on Pi OS. I've used this on both a Pi Zero 2w and Pi 5. Obviously, it works better on the 5, but it is still fantastic on the Zero.

Works fine, but I did find that the program I have used before (called "raspistill") now seems to have been replaced by one called "rpicam-still", which can do most of the same things.

Nice genuine V2.1 camera. I needed it specifically for a project- I would recomend the V3 camera however.

A good camera to start with. Beware that it does not work in the same way with Bullseye as it does with Buster. which means some of the tutorials in the latest PI4/400 guide do not work.

Better than I expected, the images are really good. One warning though: if you plan to use it with the browser, you'll have to enable the legacy camera stack in the Interfaces section of `sudo raspi-config` as the new libcamera isn't supported by Chromium yet.
