The Keywave KW007-SE is a compact 5.8GHz RF motion sensor with intelligent doppler engine, designed for reliable motion detection with low power consumption in smart home and connected-device applications.

It can detect movement from all directions at distances from 30cm up to 5 metres* in standalone operation, and uses RF sensing technology allowing it to operate behind many non-metallic materials to be discreetly integrated inside project housings. Detection results can be read from pins directly, or it can be configured and monitored via an I2C interface using most popular microcontrollers.

Development resources are available on Github, and the Keywave team are currently working on an Arduino library and Home Assistant/ESPHome examples/guidance. Watch this space!

Its compact design, fast response and simple system integration help you develop smaller, cleaner and more intelligent projects - and the pre-soldered headers let you get started straight away using a breadboard for prototyping.

Is it mmWave?

No, It's a 5.8GHz centimetre-wave sensor.

  • 5.8GHz (~50mm wavelength): Best suited for detecting gross movement, like walking into a room, waving a hand, or opening a door. It easily penetrates walls and enclosures, uses ultra-low power, and can run on batteries.
  • mmWave (30GHz to 300GHz): Best suited for detecting micro-movements, like breathing or heartbeat tracking to determine static human "presence". 24GHz is sometimes considered mmWave too.

If you need to keep lights on while someone sits completely still reading a book, choose an mmWave sensor. If you want an ultra-low power, wall-penetrating motion trigger or touchless switch, this 5.8 GHz sensor is the ideal choice.

Key features

  • 5.8GHz RF motion sensing technology
  • Detection range up to 5 metres*
  • Fast and reliable motion response
  • Suitable for concealed installation behind non-metallic materials
  • Compact design for embedded smart-home products
  • Designed for low-power and energy-saving applications
  • Suitable for lighting, appliances, switches and IoT devices
  • Connection: I2C

* Because radar does not behave exactly like light, the actual range may vary slightly depending on the environment or the type of non-metal housing if the sensor is installed inside an enclosure.

Videos

Please note - the videos below may be using a different variant of KW007 with different range abilities , however the core functionality is the same. The KW007-SE we are stocking has a range from 30cm to 5 metres.

Pinout

Pin No. Pin Name Description
P1 5V 5 V supply input
P2 3V3 3.3 V supply input (default) or LDO output
P3 GPO General-purpose output
P4 SCL I²C clock
P5 SDA I²C data
P6 GND Ground

P9 Range1 Radar detection range setting pin

Pinout notes

  • Power: 3.3V or 5V: Connect only ONE supply, 3.3V or 5V, do not connect both.
  • 5V Input Mode: Input voltage is regulated by an on-chip LDO to power the internal core
  • 3.3V Input Mode: Bypasses the internal LDO. A low-noise power source is mandatory (an external LDO is recommended)
  • It is recommended to add a 10µF decoupling capacitor to power input
