This is the new Allo Boss2 Player - the ultimate Raspberry Pi DAC solution, which comes with a Raspberry Pi 4GB* board, aluminium case with OLED and remote!
We also offer a basic version with just the DAC board, acrylic case and remote.
The Original Allo Boss DAC is/was the most successful DAC made for the Raspberry Pi. The combination of great sound and great value proved very successful.
After 3 years Allo felt the need to upgrade the Boss. The only questions was, how could they make the Boss2 sound even better?
For sound quality, they decided to use the new Cirrus Logic DAC CS43198 as a master (another first from the Allo team). Unlike the PCM5122, it has excellent THD (-120 vs – 83). Unlike Ess, the sound is “darker” (not bright, low out of band noise).
Allo are using over 30 LDOs (as usual), two super caps and countless filters. They also upgraded the power input filtering with common mode chokes.
The Boss2 Player includes a Raspberry Pi 4 4GB board and an aluminium case, along with an OLED screen and IR remote (no PSU included). Whilst specialist low-noise power supplies are the ideal power source, standard USB-C power supplies are perfectly compatible (may degrade the THD by 1-2db).
The Boss2 Player is a meaningful upgrade over the original Boss in terms of sound quality (measurements, THD / Jtest) and value.
In terms of WiFi performance of the case, in Allo's tests, the Boss2 Player plays reliably at around 5m or less from the router. Using WiFi dongles will increase the range substantially.
