This is a rugged all-in-one panel-mount capacitive fingerprint sensor in a metal body with a bi-colour LED ring, making it easy to add fingerprint detection and biometrics to your project with colourful LED goodness!
Inside the sensor is a digital signal processor (DSP) chip which removes a lot of the headaches usually associated with fingerprint sensors - it handles rendering, calculations, feature finding and searching for you - all you need to do is hook it up to your microcontroller via TTL (serial) to communicate with it.
Fingerprints can be captured and stored on the sensor itself thanks to the onboard flash memory, up to around 200 fingerprints in total.
With its tough exterior and panel-mounting option, this is going to be a nice option for custom project enclosures that need a decent security/validation option. The 6-pin 1mm pitch connector can be used directly, or snip it off to wire manually. The LED ring can show multiple colours (usually red, blue and purple but stock may vary) including some effects such as fading and blinking.
Our friends over at Adafruit have written a great tutorial for using these R503 fingerprint sensors, including an Arduino library and a CircuitPython library that can enroll and search fingerprints. You can also download the datasheet for more information.
