That thing is close but how close? When you need to measure a small distance with reasonable accuracy, such as the rough height of particularly calm bumble bee, the VCNL4030 Proximity Sensor from Vishay can do that for you. If perchance you also needed to measure the amount of light at the same time, perhaps to let the bee know if it's time for bed, you're in luck! The VCNL4030 can do that too (bumble bee not included, we tried putting it in the anti-static bag but it started buzzing in a threatening manner)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePlease note\u003c\/strong\u003e: there's quite a few chips in the VCNL4xxx series, with varying ranges and prices. While the sensors look and sound similar, the firmware for these chips is not identical, so you cannot swap the VCNL4030 for \u003ca href=\"\/products\/adafruit-vcnl4040-proximity-and-lux-sensor-stemma-qt-qwiic-ada4161\" title=\"Adafruit VCNL4040 Proximity and Lux Sensor - STEMMA QT \/ Qwiic\"\u003eVCNL4040\u003c\/a\u003e or others without recompiling with the respective libraries!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe VCNL4030 has a nice set of \u003cstrong\u003econfiguration knobs that let you tweak\u003c\/strong\u003e both the \u003cstrong\u003eproximity sensor\u003c\/strong\u003e (PS) and \u003cstrong\u003elight sensor\u003c\/strong\u003e (ALS) - for example integration time, dynamic range and sensitivity. Higher integration times mean slower conversion but you can measure dimmer light more precisely. Conversely shorter times mean fast conversion, and can measure brighter lights without oversaturating the sensor. For proximity you can also set up the duty cycle and built-in IR LED current. This lets you balance conversion speed, measurement range, precision and power usage as necessary.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo make life easier so you can focus on your important work, we've taken the VCNL4030 and put it onto a breakout PCB along with support circuitry to let you use this little wonder with \u003cstrong\u003e3.3V\u003c\/strong\u003e (\u003ca href=\"\/collections\/adafruit-feather\" title=\"Adafruit Feather\"\u003eFeather\u003c\/a\u003e\/\u003ca href=\"\/collections\/raspberry-pi\" title=\"Official Raspberry Pi Products\"\u003eRaspberry Pi\u003c\/a\u003e) or \u003cstrong\u003e5V\u003c\/strong\u003e (\u003ca href=\"\/collections\/arduino-store\" title=\"Arduino Store\"\u003eArduino\u003c\/a\u003e\/ \u003ca href=\"\/products\/adafruit-metro-328-with-headers-atmega328\" title=\"Adafruit METRO 328 with Headers\"\u003eMetro328\u003c\/a\u003e) logic levels. Additionally since it \u003cstrong\u003espeaks I2C\u003c\/strong\u003e you can easily connect it up with two wires (plus power and ground!). We've even included SparkFun \u003cstrong\u003eqwiic compatible\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/qwiic-stemma-qt\" title=\"Qwiic and STEMMA QT\"\u003eSTEMMA QT\u003c\/a\u003e \u003cstrong\u003econnectors for the I2C bus\u003c\/strong\u003e so you don't even need to solder!
