The module will automatically detect the active antenna and switch over!

The other cool feature of the new MTK3339-based module (which we have tested with great success) is the built in datalogging ability. Since there is a microcontroller inside the module, with some empty FLASH memory, the newest firmware now allows sending commands to do internal logging to that FLASH. The only thing is that you do need to have a microcontroller send the "Start Logging" command. However, after that message is sent, the microcontroller can go to sleep and does not need to wake up to talk to the GPS anymore to reduce power consumption. The time, date, longitude, latitude, and height is logged every 15 seconds and only when there is a fix. The internal FLASH can store about 16 hours of data, it will automatically append data so you don't have to worry about accidentally losing data if power is lost. It is not possible to change what is logged and how often, as its hardcoded into the module but we found that this arrangement covers many of the most common GPS datalogging requirements.

We've received reports from customers that have tested this version of the Ultimate GPS module in a high-altitude balloon, and it kept fix up to ~32km! It can do up to 10 location updates a second for high speed, high sensitivity logging or tracking. Power usage is incredibly low, only 20 mA during navigation.

Best of all, we added all the extra goodies you could ever want: a ultra-low dropout 3.3V regulator so you can power it with 3.3-5VDC in, 5V level safe inputs, ENABLE pin so you can turn off the module using any microcontroller pin or switch, a footprint for optional CR1220 coin cell to keep the RTC running and allow warm starts and a tiny bright red LED. The LED blinks at about 1Hz while it's searching for satellites and blinks once every 15 seconds when a fix is found to conserve power. If you want to have an LED on all the time, we also provide the FIX signal out on a pin so you can put an external LED on.

Two features that really stand out about version 3 MTK3339-based module is the external antenna functionality and the the built in data-logging capability. The module has a standard ceramic patch antenna that gives it -165 dBm sensitivity, but when you want to have a bigger antenna, you can snap on any 3V active GPS antenna via the uFL connector. The module will automatically detect the active antenna and switch over! Most GPS antennas use SMA connectors so you may want to pick up one of our uFL to SMA adapters.

Comes with one fully assembled and tested module, a piece of header you can solder to it for breadboarding, and a CR1220 coin cell holder. A CR1220 coin cell is not included, but we have them in the shop if you'd like to use the GPS's RTC

We have a nice fancy library for GPS usage, with background parsing and can set and query the built in GPS logging capability (called LOCUS). A full tutorial is also available, which has tons of information about the module, how to use the data logger, example code for both CircuitPython & Arduino, and more

Technical Details

Satellites: 22 tracking, 66 searching

Patch Antenna Size: 15mm x 15mm x 4mm

Update rate: 1 to 10 Hz

Position Accuracy: < 3 meters (all GPS technology has about 3m accuracy)

Velocity Accuracy: 0.1 meters/s

Warm/cold start: 34 seconds

Acquisition sensitivity: -145 dBm

Tracking sensitivity: -165 dBm

Maximum Velocity: 515m/s

Vin range: 3.0-5.5VDC

MTK3339 Operating current: 25mA tracking, 20 mA current draw during navigation

Output: NMEA 0183, 9600 baud default, 3V logic level out, 5V-safe input

DGPS/WAAS/EGNOS supported

FCC E911 compliance and AGPS support (Offline mode : EPO valid up to 14 days )

Up to 210 PRN channels

Jammer detection and reduction

Multi-path detection and compensation

Revision History:

As of 8/10/2014 we are shipping with firmware v. 5632 which improves altitude calculations and stability. The LED blinks at about 1Hz while it's searching for satellites and blinks once every 15 seconds when a fix is found to conserve power. If you want to have an LED on all the time, we also provide the FIX signal out on a pin so you can put an external LED on.

Two features that really stand out about the MTK3333-based module are the external antenna functionality and the built-in data-logging capability. The MAX-M10S module from u-blox has an extremely low power consumption that is less than 25mW in continuous tracking mode.

The on-board MAX-M10S GNSS receiver can receive signals from the GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo constellations. Thanks to the u-blox Super-S technology, the module offers improved RF sensitivity with small antennas and in non-line-of-sight scenarios. We've included an SMA connector for a sturdy connection when attaching an external antenna. The board is also equipped with an onboard rechargeable battery that provides backup power to the module's RTC. This reduces the time-to-first fix from a cold start (~24s) to a hot start (~1s). The battery will maintain RTC and GNSS orbit data without being connected to power for up to five hours. The NEO-M9N module that is populated on this board is a 92-channel u-blox M9 engine GNSS receiver, meaning it can receive signals from the GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou constellations with ~1.5 meter accuracy. This Function Board supports concurrent reception of four GNSS. This maximizes position accuracy in challenging conditions, increasing precision and decreases lock time; and thanks to the onboard rechargeable battery, you'll have backup power enabling the GPS to get a hot lock within seconds!

Utilizing our handy M.2 MicroMod connector, no soldering is required to connect it to your system. Simply match up the key on your processor and function board's bevelled edge connector to their respective key on the M.2 connector, then secure them to the Main Board with screws. Once connected, you'll have the option of choosing either the UART, SPI, or I2C (u-blox calls this Display Data Channel) port to communicate with the NEO-M9N.

The NEO-M9N module detects jamming and spoofing events and can report them to the host, so that the system can react to such events. A SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) filter combined with an LNA (Low Noise Amplifier) in the RF path is integrated into the NEO-M9N module which allows normal operation even under strong RF interferences.

U-blox based GPS products are configurable using the popular, but dense, Windows program called u-center. Plenty of different functions can be configured on the NEO-M9N: baud rates, update rates, geofencing, spoofing detection, external interrupts, SBAS/D-GPS, etc. All of this can be done within the SparkFun Arduino Library via the I2C bus!

The SparkFun GNSS Function Board - NEO-M9N includes a USB type C connector when configuring the module with u-center. Power is provided through the Function Board's edge pins and regulated down through the 3.3V voltage regulator. Two status LEDs are also included for 3V3 and PPS, which can be disabled by cutting the jumpers on the back of the board. A 1x3 header is populated on the board and includes a 2-pin selectable jumper when selecting the communication protocol between SPI or Serial/I2C. For advanced users, there are jumpers to disable the write protection for the EEPROM (WP), disconnecting the pull-up resistors (I2C), and placing the module in safe boot mode (SAFEBOOT). A U.FL connector is provided to connect a GNSS antenna of your choice to the module. The board is equipped with an onboard rechargeable battery that provides power to the RTC on the NEO-M9N. This reduces the time-to-first fix from a cold start (~24s) to a hot start (~2s). The battery will maintain RTC and GNSS orbit data without being connected to power for plenty of time.

Note: The SparkFun MicroMod GNSS Function Board - NEO-M9N does NOT include a MicroMod Artemis Processor Board, MicroMod Main Board - Single, U.FL adapter, or GNSS antenna. It can acquire and track any mix of 3 multiple satellite constellations, providing simultaneous GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo and QZSS open service L1 reception capability. This increases the number of visible satellites and reduces time-to-first-fix, allowing accurate navigation in settings such as urban The SAM-M10Q can receive up to four GNSS constellations at once which improves time-to-fix and positional accuracy even in areas with a limited view of the sky.

The SAM-M10Q includes a built-in chip antenna and is compatible with the L1 band on all five GNSS constellations (GPS L1 C/A, QZSS L1 C/A L1S, GLONASS L1OF, BeiDou B1C, and Galileo E1B/C). It has a horizontal position accuracy of 1.5m, a max update rate of 18Hz when transmitting with just one GNSS constellation (max of 5Hz with four GNSS), and a cold start time to fix of 23 seconds. The board includes a rechargeable 3V/1mAh battery to provide backup power for up to four hours to maintain a hot start of just a single second.

We designed this board to integrate into the Qwiic system that requires no soldering to connect it to the rest of your I2C system. However, the board still breaks out 0.1"-spaced pins for users who prefer a soldered connection or prototyping on a breadboard.

U-blox-based GPS products are configurable using the Windows program called u-center2 (it is highly recommended to only use u-center2 with this board and not the original u-centre). This program lets you customize all sorts of settings for the SAM-M10Q including baud rates, update rates, geofencing, spoofing detection, external interrupts, SBAS/D-GPS, etc. We also have an Arduino library for configuring the SAM-M10Q.

Get Started With The Sparkfun SAM-M 10Q GPS Guide

Features

u-blox M10 receiver

Reception of up to four concurrent GNSS constellations

Compatible GNSS Constellations

GPS L1 C/A

QZSS L1 C/A L1S

GLONASS L1OF

BeiDou B1C

Galileo E1B/C

1.5m horizontal position accuracy

Update Rate

Max 5Hz (Four GNSS)

Max 18Hz (One GNSS)

Time-to-Fix (Four GNSS)

Cold Start: 23 sec

Aided Start: 1 sec

Hot Start: 1 sec

Max Altitude: 80,000m

Max Velocity: 500m/s

Velocity Accuracy: 0.05m/s

Heading Accuracy: 0.3deg

Time Pulse Accuracy: 30ns (RMS)

3.3V VCC and I/O

Current Consumption (Four GNSS)

Acquisition: ~13mA

Tracking (Continuous): 10mA

Tracking (Power Save): 5mA (Max Three GNSS)

Backup Battery: 3V/1mAh

Two Qwiic Connectors

PTH Connections

3.3V/GND

Serial UART

I2C

Interrupt (INT)

Safe Boot (SAFE)

Reset (RST)

Time Pulse (PPS)

Resources

Schematic

Eagle Files

Board Dimensions

Hookup Guide

Datasheet (SAM-M10Q)

Integration Manual (SAM-M10Q)

Product Summary

M10 SPG 5.10 Firmware Interface Description

u-center Software

SparkFun u-blox GNSS Arduino Library -
